Harry Myers had had a long and happy marriage having married Rachel in March 1951.  He had grown up in West Bowling in Bradford and started work in 1948 for Mains Radio Gramaphones which later became Radio Rentals.  He was based at their Manchester Road factory from 1948 to 1955. 

 

As a tool setter, one of his jobs was to replace asbestos pads for the soldering irons used by the women on the production line.  He used to cut these on a Saturday morning.  Later he became foreman and worked at the Beckside Road Factory in Lidget Green, Bradford.  His office was close to a machine which was still used to cut the sheets of asbestos for the soldering pads.

 

It came as a shock to Harry when he became ill with mesothelioma in 2006.  He lost a lot of weight and underwent a number of investigations and sadly died at the age of 78 before we were instructed.

 

We saw his widow Rachel in Longridge where they had been living.  We managed to trace a witness who worked with Harry and provided evidence of exposure to asbestos. 

 

Mains Radio and Radio Rentals had a very complicated company history but we were able to finally trace the relevant insurers and recovered damages for his widow.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the lining of certain bodily organs. It most commonly affects the lining of the lungs (the pleura) but it can affect other areas including organs in the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum).

 

More than 2,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year in the UK and there is one mesothelioma death every five hours. The number of deaths from mesothelioma increased from 153 in 1968 to 1,969 in 2004 and is expected to peak at 2,450 between 2011 and 2015. 

 

The first Action Mesothelioma Day was launched on 27th February 2006.  Its objectives were to raise awareness about mesothelioma, to improve the treatment and care of mesothelioma patients, and to lobby for better funding for research into mesothelioma and for the protection and education of people who may be exposed to asbestos.
