Alec Vallance had spent most of his working life as a lagger removing, mixing and applying lagging which contained asbestos to and from pipe work and boilers in power stations, chemical plants, factories and hospitals throughout the country and abroad. 

 

He retired to Spain where he ran a small guest house.  It was there, many years after he had retired that he developed peritoneal mesothelioma.  This is a very rare cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity.  The most common form of mesothelioma is the pleural form which affects the lining of the lungs.  Mesothelioma is a condition caused by asbestos.

 

He was admitted to hospital in Denia near his home in Spain.  He had no family there and his brother and nephew came over to support him. 

 

When he was diagnosed with an asbestos related condition we were contacted and arranged to visit him in hospital in Spain.  We were able to take a full statement from him and on our return to England began his claim and started court proceedings on his behalf using a mesothelioma fast track court procedure. 

 

Unfortunately his condition progressed rapidly.  He came back to Leigh-on-Sea to live with his nephew in his last few months.  We were able to recover compensation but sadly this was received just after he died from mesothelioma. 

 

Until he contracted mesothelioma he had been very active in his retirement and was enjoying his life in Spain.  His family had visited him regularly.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the lining of certain bodily organs. It most commonly affects the lining of the lungs (the pleura) but it can affect other areas including organs in the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum).

 

More than 2,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year in the UK and there is one mesothelioma death every five hours. The number of deaths from mesothelioma increased from 153 in 1968 to 1,969 in 2004 and is expected to peak at 2,450 between 2011 and 2015. 

 

The first Action Mesothelioma Day was launched on 27th February 2006.  Its objectives were to raise awareness about mesothelioma, to improve the treatment and care of mesothelioma patients, and to lobby for better funding for research into mesothelioma and for the protection and education of people who may be exposed to asbestos.
