About 1,000 tonnes of asbestos have been found hidden underground whilst workers were demolishing Kirkdale Fire Station in Liverpool, reports the Liverpool Echo.  A large concrete slab which the fire station sat on was formed partly of asbestos.  Work was stopped on Derby Street and the site sealed off as inspectors verified the discovery.

 

Contractors who specialise in asbestos removal transferred the contaminated waste to landfill in 52 trucks.

 

The building work is being carried out as part of a £40 million private finance initiative (PFI) to build 20 new fire stations in areas such as Bootle and Netherton, Formby and Newton-le-Willows.

 

The Merseyside Fire Authority was told by Andy Groom, lead officer for PFI in the North West that, “there was no risk to firefighters or staff because the asbestos was contained and only became evident when the building was knocked down. We are still working out with the contractors the overall cost, but 1,000 tonnes of asbestos had to be taken away and put into landfill with the associated tax.”

 

Asbestos related illnesses are caused by inhaling asbestos fibres. Exposure can lead to mesothelioma; a type of cancer that typically affects the lining of the lungs.  Asbestos exposure can also cause scarring of the lungs and other respiratory problems. Asbestos is responsible for approximately 4,000 deaths every year, making it the biggest single cause of work related deaths in the UK.

 

The cost of the safe disposal of the asbestos could be as much as £200,000, which has been picked up by the Fire Authority.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the lining of certain bodily organs. It most commonly affects the lining of the lungs (the pleura) but it can affect other areas including organs in the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum).

 

More than 2,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year in the UK and there is one mesothelioma death every five hours. The number of deaths from mesothelioma increased from 153 in 1968 to 1,969 in 2004 and is expected to peak at 2,450 between 2011 and 2015. 

 

The first Action Mesothelioma Day was launched on 27th February 2006.  Its objectives were to raise awareness about mesothelioma, to improve the treatment and care of mesothelioma patients, and to lobby for better funding for research into mesothelioma and for the protection and education of people who may be exposed to asbestos.
