John Pickering solicitor cycles 2500 miles to raise money for research into asbestos related diseases

On 9th September 2007 Paul Glanville set off to cycle from Paris to Marrakech to raise money for medical research into mesothelioma. Averaging 75 miles per day his journey takes him through through France, Andorra, Spain and into Morocco.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lung caused by exposure to asbestos dust. There is no cure and life expectancy from diagnosis is typically between 12 and 18 months. Mesothelioma causes more than 1800 deaths per year in the UK yet there is very little funding for research into a cure. St Barts Hospital in London is one of the few sites currently undertaking research.

Paul lives in Hebden Bridge where hundreds have died from asbestos related cancers, mainly contracted from working at Acre Mill. More info

All money raised will go to the Bart's Mesothelioma Research Fund. This is a registered charity under the auspices of the special trustees of St Bartholomews Hospital (Reg Charity 212563).

Paul has said, "Only about 85 per cent of it is on roads and I think when we get to Morocco it gets very mountainous. I'm going in a group of about 30 people but I haven't met any of them yet. We will camp all the way. I'm sure it will be hard but I'm really excited about the trip and looking forward it."
